Why Visibility Matters
School buses are statistically among the safest vehicles on the road, yet 79% of school-aged fatalities involving a school bus occur outside the vehicle, in or near the loading zone.

After years of research, Canada's Task Force on School Bus Safety concluded that perimeter visibility systems can help drivers detect children and other vulnerable road users in critical blind-spot areas. What CMVSS 111 Requires
Understanding the technical requirements matters, especially when evaluating whether a solution will achieve genuine compliance or just clear a low bar.
For every new school bus, the amended standard requires:
- A perimeter visibility system that includes cameras and an in-cab display for the driver.
- Visibility around the vehicle in areas mirrors cannot adequately cover.
- Driver displays that comply with distraction-limiting guidelines.
- Compliance with separate camera specifications for operators who choose to install stop-arm or infraction cameras.
Importantly, a single rear-view camera or forward-facing dashcam alone does not satisfy the requirement. The regulation calls for comprehensive perimeter visibility around the bus.
