FAQs

What is asset tracking, and how does it work?

Asset tracking uses a device installed on equipment, trailers, or containers to report the asset’s location and movement. Depending on the device, connected sensors, and configuration, it can also report information about the asset’s condition. Data is transmitted to the Unity platform, where teams can view connected assets and configure alerts.

Can you track assets that have no power source?

Yes. Battery- and solar-powered devices can track compatible trailers, containers, chassis, and other assets without a fixed power supply. Logistics Gateway Solar uses solar charging, a rechargeable battery, and primary battery backup to support long-term asset tracking, including assets that remain in yards or move between sites for extended periods.

How long does an asset tracker battery last?

Battery life depends on the device, power source, configuration, and reporting frequency. Trackers that transmit location updates less frequently generally consume less power than those reporting more frequently, so reporting intervals can be configured to suit the asset and operational needs. Solar-powered devices use solar charging and backup power to support long-term operation with reduced maintenance.

How often does an asset tracker report its location?

Reporting frequency depends on the device, power source, configuration, network coverage, and operational needs. Depending on the selected tracker, reporting can use configured intervals or respond to movement or other events. Updates may be delayed when network connectivity is unavailable, unless the selected device and service support an alternative communication method.

What is the difference between asset tracking and asset monitoring?

Asset tracking primarily provides location and movement data. Asset monitoring adds information about an asset’s condition and usage. Depending on the device and connected sensors, this can include temperature, humidity, pressure, light exposure, engine hours, diagnostics, and other operational data.

How do you monitor temperature-sensitive cargo in transit?

Environmental sensors can monitor temperature, humidity, pressure, and light exposure. For cold-chain operations, the Cold Chain Gateway aggregates data from compatible reefer units and sensors into a single view, enabling real-time temperature monitoring, alerts, and consolidated condition reporting.

Does Powerfleet provide GPS asset tracking and geofencing?

Yes. Compatible Powerfleet asset trackers use GNSS positioning, which includes GPS, to show where connected assets are and how they move. Depending on the device and configuration, teams can create geofences and receive alerts when an asset enters or leaves a defined area, moves unexpectedly, or reaches a specified location.

Can asset tracking help recover stolen equipment?
Asset tracking can support theft prevention and recovery by alerting teams to unexpected movement, geofence activity, or tampering, depending on the device and configuration. Location and movement data can then help teams investigate suspected theft and support recovery efforts.
What types of assets can you track?
Powerfleet can track both powered and unpowered assets, including trailers, containers, chassis, forklifts, generators, and industrial machinery used in construction, agriculture, logistics, and other operations. Depending on the device and configuration, powered assets can report engine hours and diagnostics, while unpowered assets use self-contained, battery- or solar-powered trackers to provide location, movement, and sensor data.
Does asset tracking work alongside existing business systems?

Yes. Unity can ingest data from compatible Powerfleet devices, OEM systems, and third-party sources. It also supports integrations with business platforms, including ERP, TMS, and warehouse management systems, helping teams use asset information alongside data from their existing systems.
