FAQs

How do you track construction equipment that moves between sites?

A compatible tracker installed on each machine reports its location to the Unity platform, allowing you to view tracked assets in one place, whether they are on-site, in transit, or parked at the yard. Reporting frequency varies by device,  configuration, and network coverage. This gives construction, mining, oilfield, and equipment rental teams a clearer record of machinery location without relying solely on calls or manual checks.

How can equipment tracking help deter theft on remote sites?

Alerts can notify teams when tracked equipment moves unexpectedly or is used outside configured working hours. Trackers such as Oyster are compact and can be discreetly installed, while Remora includes tamper detection and reporting. Location and movement data can help teams investigate suspected theft and support asset recovery. Alert delivery depends on network connectivity and the configured reporting frequency.

What is engine-hour tracking, and why does it matter for maintenance?

Engine hours measure how long a machine has been running, providing teams with a usage-based measure for managing service intervals. Busy machines can be serviced based on operating time, while lower-usage equipment is less likely to be serviced prematurely, subject to the manufacturer’s time-based and other maintenance requirements. This can help reduce unnecessary service costs and downtime, and utilisation data helps teams identify underused equipment.

Can you get alerts when a machine is used without permission?

Yes. Powerfleet’s off-road solutions can provide real-time alerts for unauthorised use or faults, and you can also set alerts for activity outside working hours, depending on the device and configuration. This helps teams identify equipment misuse or faults as they occur and investigate them sooner.

How often does an equipment tracker report its location?
Location-reporting intervals depend on the device, power source, and configuration. Compatible battery-powered trackers can report less frequently when an asset is stationary to conserve battery life, then report more often when movement is detected. Powered equipment trackers can support more frequent updates because they draw power from the machine. Transmission of updates also depends on network coverage.
What is the difference between tracking powered and unpowered equipment?
Powered equipment such as generators, loaders, and industrial vehicles can supply power to a gateway. That gateway can record engine hours, diagnostics, usage patterns, and location, depending on the equipment’s interfaces and the gateway configuration. Unpowered assets such as bins, trailers, and attachments can be equipped with battery-powered trackers. These trackers focus on location and movement, and some models can also monitor temperature and tampering.
Can rental companies track how much their machines are used?

Yes. For compatible powered equipment, engine-hour and utilisation records show how long each machine operated during a rental period. Rental teams can use these records to compare actual usage with contract terms, support billing, and identify heavily used or underused equipment. Consolidating the data on a single platform also reduces reliance on manually submitted usage records.

Which trackers work in harsh or extreme conditions?

Remora is designed for harsh environments and extended deployments. Its IP67-rated enclosure is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. It also features a high-capacity battery and built-in shock, light, and temperature sensors. Yabby and Oyster have rugged, weatherproof enclosures suited to mining, oilfield, and construction sites, where equipment is often exposed to dust, water, and vibration. Select the appropriate model based on its published operating-temperature range, ingress-protection rating, and installation requirements.
